Radical Happiness. Collective Joy.
Patrick Infurna mentioned these words at a podcast taping in June 2023. I was there along with hundreds of others who wanted to learn more and tap into what had been a magical first season for the Boys in Green. People had been flocking to Virtue Field in greater numbers week after week that first season in 2022, culminating in a sold out game against Western Mass and “That Goal” by Diba Nwegbo. What followed was the playoffs and a second season that was bigger, louder and joyous by almost every possible metric despite not making it into the playoffs due to a Byzantine USL 2 formula.
Those of us who packed the South Stands to sing along with our fellow fans were there to be a part of something. To find our people and come out of the isolation and lockdowns of Covid and rediscovering the joy of being part of something bigger than yourself. Of being lost, if only for a few hours, in the loving embrace of togetherness. Turning to your neighbors in the stands and seeing their faces light up at a goal or an artfully played pass.
We spend so much time stuck in our own heads trying to deal with our doubts, our worries and fears. Trying to be strong despite everything the world is throwing at us and the world today is SCARY. It makes us want to curl up and block out anything and everything just to get some sense of peace. But I think that only makes us feel more alone. In spite of all the love and care we get from our families and close friends.
We all want and need a space full of unconditional love, regardless of race, creed or gender. So we invite all of you to cheer with us. To sing with us. To be a part of a family resplendent in green from all over our state, our country, our world. Because the world is what we make it and we choose to make it a place of caring and conscience, community and joy.
With love from all the Bhoys
